Notes on Night in Tunisia

The tab is based on Dizzy Gillespie - The Complete RCA Victor Recordings, Disc 1, Track 9. It has been called a “bop anthem.” The tab is just for the head, or melody, that is played before Diz starts to improvise on the record, and is an approximation for guitar. There is a guitar version on YouTube with a walking bass line that is better as a solo guitar piece than the version I wrote out.

The MIDI file was made by taking the MIDI generated by Tabledit (the tab software I use most of the time) and combining it with an accompaniment generated by Band In A Box, based on the chords and two BIAB styles.

Notice how the rhythm changes from latin to mild swing eighths. That really threw me when I was trying to learn this.

There are versions by many of the jazz greats, including John Coltrane, and our local public library had a DVD with film of Diz performing it in the 1940s. If I remember right, there was a vocal on the video, but I might have that wrong.
